An ERP is a set of modules on one database. You rarely need all of them on day one, and choosing the right order matters more than the feature list.
The core modules
Finance and accounts holds the ledger, payables, receivables, bank entries and GST. Every other module posts into it. Sales covers quotation, order, dispatch and invoice. Purchase covers requisition, purchase order, goods receipt and supplier bills.
Inventory tracks stock by item and location with optional batch, expiry or serial numbers. HR and payroll handles attendance, leave and salary with statutory deductions. Manufacturing adds bills of material, production orders and costing for factories.
How to choose the starting set
| If your biggest pain is | Start with |
|---|---|
| Stock mismatches and stock-outs | Inventory + Purchase |
| Late or wrong invoices | Sales + Finance (GST billing) |
| Payroll errors and compliance | HR + Payroll |
| Cost overruns in production | Manufacturing + Inventory |
| No single view of the business | Finance + Sales + Reports |
Add modules in phases
- Phase 1: the module that hurts most, plus finance so data posts correctly.
- Phase 2: connected modules such as purchase and sales.
- Phase 3: HR, payroll and manufacturing.
- Phase 4: dashboards, approvals and integrations such as Tally or WhatsApp.
Phasing keeps training manageable and lets the team trust the numbers before the next module goes live.
How modules share data
The point of modules is that they use the same item, customer and supplier records. Create an item once and it appears in sales, purchase, stock and manufacturing. Change a tax rate once and it applies everywhere. This is why one database matters more than a long module list.
- Masters (items, parties, employees) are created once and reused.
- Transactions in one module create entries in others, such as a sale reducing stock and posting to the ledger.
- Reports can combine modules, such as margin per item after purchase cost and sales price.
Check: Ask whether modules share one database. Separate products stitched together by exports bring back the double entry ERP is meant to remove.
