SNMP is the standard language for device monitoring. Here is how to use it safely on a NAS.
What SNMP gives you
A monitoring tool can poll values such as disk status, temperature, interface traffic and volume usage from the NAS SNMP agent.
Versions
| Version | Security |
|---|---|
| v1 | Community string, clear text |
| v2c | Community string, clear text |
| v3 | Authentication and encryption |
Setup checklist
- Enable SNMP on the NAS.
- Prefer v3 with authentication.
- Restrict access to the monitoring server.
- Change default community strings.
- Test with a single device.
If SNMP is limited
Some NAS expose few values through SNMP. SSH or a vendor API may fill the gap. See SNMP NAS monitoring with NexoraNAS.
