NAS monitoring means continuously checking the health, capacity and availability of network attached storage so that problems are found and fixed before they cause downtime or data loss.
The short definition
A NAS (network attached storage) is a device that stores files and shares them over the network. NAS monitoring is the practice of checking that device automatically: are the disks healthy, is the RAID array intact, is there free space, is the temperature normal and is the device reachable.
What a good NAS monitor watches
- Disk status and S.M.A.R.T. indicators
- RAID or storage pool state
- Temperature, fans and power supplies
- Volume and share usage and growth
- Network interface status
- Availability of file-sharing services
Why it matters
Most NAS failures are preceded by warnings that nobody reads. A degraded array looks fine to users. A full volume stops backups. Monitoring turns hidden signals into alerts.
How monitoring works
- The monitoring system polls the NAS using SNMP, SSH or a vendor API.
- Values are compared with thresholds.
- An alert is sent when a threshold is crossed.
- History is stored for trends and reports.
NAS monitoring vs backup
Monitoring watches the health of storage, while backup protects the data. You need both. See our guide to the 3-2-1 backup rule.
