Disks give warnings before many failures. Here is what to watch on a NAS, what the values suggest and how to turn them into alerts.
Check the basics first
- Disk status in each bay
- S.M.A.R.T. overall health result
- Reallocated, pending and uncorrectable sector counts
- Disk temperature
- Power-on hours
What the values suggest
| Value | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| Reallocated sectors rising | Surface wear; plan to replace |
| Pending sectors | Unstable sectors; replace soon |
| High temperature | Cooling or airflow issue |
| Disk offline | Array may be degraded |
How often to check
Manually checking each NAS daily is not realistic. Automated polling every few minutes with alerts on change is better. Run a S.M.A.R.T. extended test periodically if your NAS supports scheduling.
Limits of S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T. catches many gradual failures but not all. Some drives fail suddenly. Keep RAID and tested backups.
Automate it
A tool such as NexoraNAS disk health monitoring reads values from your devices through SNMP or an API and sends alerts.
