Billing and stock belong together. Here is what GST billing inside inventory software should do for you, and where you still need your accountant.
The GST split
| Supply | Tax charged |
|---|---|
| Within the same state | CGST + SGST |
| Between states | IGST |
| Export or SEZ under LUT | Zero-rated |
| Export or SEZ with payment of tax | IGST |
The deciding factor is the place of supply, taken from the invoice or the customer's state.
What a GST invoice needs
- Supplier and customer GSTIN (where applicable)
- Invoice number, unique, up to 16 characters
- Date, place of supply, HSN/SAC and taxable value
- Tax rate and amount by type
- Total in figures and words
HSN digit requirements depend on turnover; verify current rules.
Credit notes and returns
A sales return should produce a credit note linked to the original invoice, reversing goods and tax in proportion, and restoring stock. A good system settles rounding on the last return so the total credit equals the invoice.
Why stock-linked billing helps
- Invoices cannot sell what is not there (reservation and stock checks)
- Tax is frozen at posting
- Margin is calculated from the same ledger
- Returns restore stock automatically
What your accountant still does
📌 NexoraIMS is GST-ready, not a GST filing tool. It does not generate e-invoice IRN or e-way bills, and its GST returns page is a tracker for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B status, not a filing integration. Check e-invoice thresholds and rules with your CA.
